Arup Legends: Jorgen Nissen
Jorgen Nissen came from a family of Danish cabinet makers. He explains what influence this had on him as a bridge engineer. He joined Arup in 1962 and helped the firm break into civil engineering by winning work on bridges. As a result of Arup’s successful foray into civils, Ove’s ideas of Total Architecture were developed into broader ideas around Total Design. Jorgen describes some of the most important bridges that he worked on, from Japan’s Ushibuka bridge to the Øresund bridge linking Denmark to Sweden. He finishes by describing what he looks for in a beautiful bridge.
